The third generation VW Touareg arrived for the 2019 model
year and the all-new model is larger, more modern and luxurious and loaded with
the latest entertainment and safety tech. Thanks to the new underpinning the
model is also more comfortable on the road and initially the luxury, five-seat
SUV debuted with the limited number of the powertrains. The new Touareg isn’t
available on sale in the US where brand launched, larger and market-dedicated
The next 2020 VW Touareg won’t change much visually or bring notable equipment upgrades but new versions will address the lack of the powertrain options. Buyers will get new engine options joining the current V6 TDI versions. The new Touareg will provide a new V-6 petrol unit and there will also be the Audi SQ7-sourced V-8 turbodiesel. VW has also been expected to offer the PHEV version at some point.
2020 VW Touareg: Powertrains
The redesigned VW Touareg debuted with the 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel engine available in different states of tune depending on the market. A Euro 6-compliant V-6 TDI makes 230 hp and 500 Nm of torque in one version while a more powerful variant delivers 285 hp and peak torque of 600 Nm. VW combines this engine with 8-speed automatic transmission with torque converter and 4MOTION four-wheel drive. The Touareg can tow up to 3,5 tons.
The 2020 VW Touareg will offer more powertrain options
including a new 3.0-liter V-6 petrol engine. The new petrol unit will
outperform the range-toppling V-6 TDi with 335 hp while max torque will be 450
Nm. The new petrol engine will route the power through the 8-speed Tiptronic
transmission to all four wheels. Sprinting to 62mph will spend 5.9 seconds and
the engine will return poorer fuel eminency than the TDI equivalent.
The third-generation Touareg will also get a turbodiesel V-8 version with the engine borrowed from the Audi SQ7. A 4.0-liter turbocharged V-8 diesel will provide 420 hp and max torque of 900 Nm. The Touareg V-8 will reportedly need 4.9 seconds to reach 62 mph.
2020 VW Touareg: Design
The 2020 VW Touareg won’t bring notable styling changes
until the next refresh while new powertrain options should get some unique
The third-generation Touareg is based on the MLB platform, a widespread architecture which is also found under the Audi models, Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, etc. The model is also larger and better equipped than in the previous iteration and applies the brand’s new design language. The model has a sleek and elegant style with thigh body lines. It looks elegant from every angle and has modern grille and lights design.
The base Touareg rides on 19-inch wheels and R-Line version
gets a sportier look with unique bumpers, side skirts and 20-inch wheels.
The Touareg V-8 TDI should get 19-inch wheels, automatic
headlights, air suspension, electric tailgate by default and offer LED matric
headlights, four-wheel steering and other options.
Inside the cabin, the new-gen Touareg is also a huge step
forward in both design and equipment. A longer and wider body provides also
better comfort and cargo capacity and interior leaves a high-luxury impression.
There are also plenty of comforts and tech features
available combined with attractive and high-quality surfaces and contrasting
accents. The new V-8 TDI version should also get unique interior treatment with
metal and grey accents combined with leather upholstery and wood trim.
The base version will equip a 7-inch central display,
satellite navigation, and broad range of active safety equipment. Upgrades will
include ergoComfort leather seats, the newest Innovision infotainment system
with 15-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument panel.
The model will also equip a number of safety systems on
board. The Touareg will use high-speed automatic emergency braking, adaptive
cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot
monitoring, pedestrian and bike detection, auto parking, etc.
